Spotlight on... The Berkshire Choral Festival!

Last Saturday night, BCF was honored at the Berkshire Children’s Chorus Sweetheart Gala as a valued “Partner in Song.” BCC is a community chorus comprised of sixth through ninth grade students. In addition, BCC offers an apprentice chorus, for students in grades two through five, and the Coda chorus for BCC graduates in high school. Artistic Director Nancy Loder is the founder of BCC and directs all three choruses. She is also the Choral Director for the Southern Berkshire Regional School District. Last summer, a group of BCC members sang with BCF in the Latin American concert, and over the past few summers BCF has had several young singers from the BCC attend as Berkshire Scholars. This summer we hope to have seven attend (including a tenor!). BCF has also employed BCC singers as “Summer Saints”, our summer office staff. BCF was awarded a lovely objet d’art, which will be displayed in the office. The Gala was attended by BCF staff, board members Catherine Miller and Wendy Linscott, and Emerita Mary H. Smith, who all shared a noisy, boisterous table!

Arvo Pärt wins 2008 Sonning Music Prize

Arvo Pärt, whose Te Deum will be performed by BCF on July 28, has been named the winner in the 2008 Léonie Sonning Music Prize, Denmark’s top award in the field. The Sonning Music Foundation will present the award – 600,000 Danish kroner (about $106,000) – at a special concert at the Radiohusets Concert Hall in Copenhagen on May 22. In announcing the award, The Sonning Music Foundation called the 71-year-old composer “one of the most original voices of our time.” The prize, established in 1959, is given every year to an outstanding musical figure. Past winners include Yo-Yo Ma, Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Leonard Bernstein and Miles Davis.
